Being concerned that you’re not producing enough breast milk for your baby is probably the most common concern we hear.
We get it, your boobs don’t have Oz measures on them, you can’t see how much your baby has had.
You can see what is coming out the other end though 💩
Plenty of wet and dirty nappies is the best indication that your baby is getting enough, it can’t come out if it hasn’t gone in.
True low supply usually has a medical or physical reason rather than a supply being low due to other external factors such as poor positioning & attachment or an oral tie, for example.
Sometimes the underlying issue can be managed and a full supply can be achieved, at other times this isn’t possible and a mother may not be able to produce enough milk to sustain their baby alone.
This does not mean that you can’t breastfeed, ANY breast milk you can give to your baby means that you have or are breastfeeding. Combi feeding and using donor breast milk or formula is still breastfeeding.
If you are aware before you give birth that you may have supply issues due to an underlying condition please make your midwife aware and ask for support from the outset. Often donor breast milk, unless in an unregulated peer to peer scheme, is only available by clinical request.
We are always here to support you, you are not alone.
