What is BOOBS Peer support?

We support mums through online and face-to-face peer support appointments with our trained volunteers who are all breastfeeding mums living in Salford or Bury.

We have been supporting parents through 1:1 peer support since April 2019, and have supported over 1500 families through our team of volunteers. Our Peer Support volunteers are all breastfeeding mothers, with a wealth of experience and have been trained as Level 2 Peer Supporters.

This means they can support with common breastfeeding issues such as sore nipples, milk supply, engorged breasts and cluster feeding. They can also identify and signpost to relevant sources of support when things are more complex. They can observe mums feeding their baby and give information and tips on positioning and attachment if needed. We find most mums just need a friendly, listening ear, some encouragement and a gentle adjustment, or a chat through different positions and things to try. You are not alone – 95% of every issue we come across is something someone has experienced before!

Our Peer Support volunteers can meet mums in any of our 140+ BOOBS Approved venues across Salford and Bury for a face to face appointment. They are also available on the phone or video call. You just need to fill in the self-referral form and Kerry will be in contact to arrange. If your baby is under 6 weeks old, we may be able to offer a home visit, but this is subject to criteria (such as having had a C-section). Please get in touch either way!

If you can’t wait for an appointment, we are also available on webchat all year round. Speak to a volunteer who may be able to send you resources, links or videos or simply have a chat with you and then invite you to meet us face to face.

We’re also available every Wednesday at the VFTS Stay and Play session in Salford, every Wednesday at a pram walk in Bury and most Fridays at the Breastfeeding Circle in Prestwich. We also run our Breastfeeding Cafes on the last Friday of each month, alternating between Salford and Bury boroughs.

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for being so lovely this morning, it’s been a really difficult and emotional time for me recently, and I felt so supported. When I got home and my son had woken up i thought I’d try one of the positions that Shaunagh recommended and it was so much better! So thank you for being amazing.”

Other things we do

We run monthly breastfeeding cafes which are social sessions, perfect for meeting other mums and reaching out for support if needed.

BOOBS Approved

Our BOOBS Approved venues are local independent businesses, all creating a safe, friendly space for you to breastfeed in with no obligation to spend a penny.

Antenatal Classes

We run 3-week antenatal sessions focused specifically on breastfeeding. Aimed at parents-to-be who are 30+ weeks pregnant, these sessions are free to access and run throughout the year.

Pram walks

We run weekly pram and sling walks across Bury borough to bring mums together to get active, learn more about their local area and access breastfeeding support.

We run regular social and education events throughout the year including in World Breastfeeding Week in August. This year, we are also hosting fundraising events to raise money as a charity.
